Back Story:

“Whananaki” is a commissioned piece by New Zealand artist Kylie Rusk, capturing the serene beauty of the Whananaki region. To create this artwork, Rusk visited the client’s beach house, photographing the view to ensure an authentic representation. The painting is characterized by soft yellows and ochres, imparting a warm, tranquil atmosphere. The client requested darker tones in the water to emulate the estuary channel, adding depth and contrast to the composition.

In the foreground, Motutara Farm is depicted on the left, while Whananaki South Sandspit appears on the right. The background features distant views of Sandy Bay and Tutukaka, creating a sense of expansive coastal landscape. Rusk’s technique of layering translucent, watered-down paint captures the subtleties of light and color, resulting in an ethereal and immersive scene.

“Whananaki” exemplifies Rusk’s ability to blend personal experience with artistic expression, offering viewers a contemplative glimpse into the serene landscapes of New Zealand.
