Description
Cathedral Cove from the Ocean shows the well-known Coromandel landmark from the sea, painted in Kylie Rusk’s recognisable layered style. The 900 × 600 mm acrylic-on-board work leads the viewer through calm water towards the natural rock arch, which stands out in soft limestone tones against the backdrop of sky and sea.
The ocean is painted in tonal blues and turquoise, with visible texture and depth. The sky transitions from soft whites to blush pinks, capturing the light at either end of the day. The rock arch—shaped over time by wind and tide—is gently highlighted, with subtle shadows giving it form without dominating the scene.
Rusk’s use of light, colour, and texture gives the work a balanced feel. Her soft ochres and cool greys show the contrast between the solid cliffs and the changing light on the water. The composition is calm and steady, with a sense of space and openness.
As in many of her landscapes, Rusk draws on personal experiences of place. Rather than aiming for photographic realism, she paints what stands out to her—often based on memory and feeling. This work is typical of her practice, where coastlines, light, and layered surfaces come together to form a strong but quiet image.
Finished with a protective UV coating, Cathedral Cove from the Ocean offers a clear and thoughtful view of one of New Zealand’s most recognisable coastal spots.
