Description
Tutukaka Looking South is based on a spot along the Tutukaka Lighthouse Walk — a popular 2–3 km coastal track that winds through pōhutukawa trees, rocky bays, and native bush. The walk leads to a small solar-powered lighthouse and offers great views out over the coastline.
This painting shows the view looking south from around the halfway point of the track. The landscape has been painted in Kylie’s signature style using soft blues, earthy ochres, and crisp whites. The colours and composition aim to capture the natural light and calm feel of the area.
As with most of Kylie’s works, the painting started from a photo taken on location. The process begins with broad washes for the sky and water, followed by more detailed layers for the land. The result is a balanced image that reflects the feeling of standing in the landscape.
This piece is about the simplicity of the scene — a quiet moment on a favourite coastal walk.
